Hello there! It's an Art Journal show-and-tell today. We are almost at the end of October and while a Halloween project would be the obvious choice, I decided to hop off the bandwagon and pursue a different theme. Looking ahead to November ( which is a little over a week away -
eeeek!), I decided to play with the
Pretty Poppies stamp sheet to create a Remembrance Day inspired page.
I used acrylic paints for the background. Pale blue washed down with gesso and pale green for the field. It's a simple page, no unnecessary embellishments, textures or distractions. Tranquillity. Just a field of red poppies against a clear blue sky with little white clouds. A telling contrast... lest we forget the price of peace.
When the background is completely dry, I stamped the poppies directly on the page with
Versafine Vintage Sepia. I coloured the stems and leaves with
Copics and
Faber Castel Brush Markers. Then I stamped the poppies and buds separately, coloured and fussy cut them before adhering them to the page using R
anger Multi Medium Matte. I added a tiny touch of
Wink of Stella Clear to each poppy.
I wanted the poppies to look like they are swaying gently in the breeze. So I added a small piece o foam tape in the middle to the flowers before adhering the cut-out poppies. I did the same for the poppy buds too and added a dollop of
Ranger Glossy Accents to give a rounded edge.
For the quote, I used
Echo Park Allison alpha stamps and
Ranger Archival Black ink. I added
Nuvo Crystal Drops in Duck Egg, falling from the sky - the young men who fell to bring peace. The droplets blend into the sky beautifully, so I adjusted the lighting to be able to photograph it.
The quote is the last line of the 4th stanza of Laurence Binyon's poem "For The Fallen":
They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning,
We will remember them.
